artist's statement: Literally and metaphorically, my finger-paintings represent the unification of opposites. I leverage the power of opposites to amplify the perceived presence of one another by repeatedly (thousands of times in a painting) dispatching small discs of complementary color mixtures next to each other on the canvas. Works are built over many sessions, each in which a discrete color is mixed and applied arbitrarily via the tapping of my paint-dipped fingertips on the canvas. I literally feel my way around the painted surface, modulating the pressure of my touch as intuition deems necessary. When my fingertips are loaded with paint, the applied dots of paint obscure what lies below. When the paint on my fingertips is almost used up, the applied dots lose their shape/opacity and reveal passages of color from below. Through this process of accumulation, my paintings grow as they cover up their past. Yet, look closely and you will observe that the ostensibly unified paint skin is arbitrarily pocked with passages that literally offer glimpses into the past.
